Rebates - Psychologist, Counselling & Mediation Services » Psychologist, Counselling & Mediation Services

Access to

The Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)

If you have a mental health issue, the number of sessions you can have under the MBS in a calendar year is 10  (more if your referring doctor (GP) thinks there are exceptional circumstances) with your GP assessing your progress after six sessions.

How do I pay under the MBS?

Psychologists set their own fees, which are usually higher than the Medicare rebate available to you, so there will be a gap to cover.

If the psychologist is charging a higher fee than the bulk billing rate, you will first pay the psychologist and then get a receipt, which you can use to claim your rebate through Medicare. You can do that in person or by using the Medicare App, which you can download from the Medicare web site.  This allows you to receive your rebate into your nominated bank account without leaving home.

You can’t claim the Medicare rebate and then claim on private insurance to cover the gap fee, so you need to decide whether to claim from Medicare or from a private insurer.

How do I get access to a psychologist?

If your GP thinks you have a mental disorder, under the Medicare rebate scheme, he or she can refer you to a psychologist through a Mental Health Plan, written by the GP.  You then take that to the psychologist and it’s the basis on which you work together for the changes you want.

If you want to see a psychologist you have chosen yourself, tell your GP and ask for that referral. Give your GP the psychologist’s business card with their Medicare Provider Number on it. If you don’t know a psychologist, your GP can make a referral for you.  Ask your psychologist or GP about the disorders that are covered.

Other Problems Not Covered by Medicare Rebates

If you have problems that don’t seem to be covered under the MBS, for instance couple communication, you may need to pay your own fees.  If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim a rebate.  Ask your provider about that.

Arranging for service under a Mental Health Plan

If you have had a referral to Rosalin or have found her yourself, you may have the option of getting a Mental Health Plan and claiming substantial rebates on fees.  Any visits you make to Rosalin before getting a Mental Health Plan cannot later be covered by the Medicare Rebate scheme.

How to apply

Make an appointment with your doctor and discuss with him or her whether you would benefit from a Plan.  Any adult or child can apply and your GP can discuss with you the range of issues that receive coverage.  Only individual service can be provided under your Plan, so it does not cover couple or family work.  Helping you to prepare for a process involving your partner, former partner or a family member might be appropriate as part of your treatment.

How will I be assessed?

Your GP will use a simple test to help establish whether you need support and will write a letter, outlining needs to be addressed and the number of sessions being  authorised before re-assessment.

Who can I see under my Plan?

Your GP must refer you to a registered professional using their Medicare Provider Number, so be sure to take that information to your medical appointment.  Rosalin’s provider number is 4197097T.

Who will know about my work with a Psychologist?

Rosalin confirms with your GP that you have begun work, then provides a brief report of progress at 5 or 6  sessions, and again when you stop work.  The GP is not concerned with the content of what you are resolving but in the improvement of your mental health.

How can I self-assess for disorders related to major life changes?

Go to the Beyond Blue web site and look at the symptom checklist information.  There are several tests that can help you assess your current functioning and there is an explanation of how events such as losses, critical incidents and adverse living and working conditions can combine with personality to create the onset of disorders, both transient and longer term.

There is also information about effective treatments, which is encouraging as you take steps to return to full wellness.

What other assistance is available?

Many private health insurers cover psychological services, so check with yours.

Victims of Crime can work with Rosalin under an agreement with Queensland and other States’s victims’ services.

Rosalin is also a registered provider for Workcover claimants.
